What’s The Best RAM for Gaming This 2017?

Too Long; Didn't Read (TL;DR)

If you don't want to read the entire guide (which is admittedly quite long) this TL;DR shows you our Editor's Pick.

Our top pick is the Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB. You'll notice immediately is its aluminum heat spreaders. Without it, let’s say it wouldn’t last a day if you’re into gaming marathons. But that’s not something to worry about, it delivers SUPERIOR temperature management  and prevents overheating.

And actually, it’s our best gaming RAM for the year 2017!

WHY WE LOVE IT:

  • Uses latest 4th generation Intel Core platform
  • Delivers an aggressive look for aesthetics
  • Geared for high overclocking potential
  • Available in multiple colors for customization

We know that gamers are always busy with their action-filled *virtual* life, and we don’t want to you spend your precious time on researching for the best ram for gaming online – instead, we’ve gathered the top dogs in one article to make it even easier for you. Besides, we’re all bros here (Or not. Hi girls!)

Let’s talk about how great Corsair is, we can say that it’s a beast in its own right due to the company’s way of doing things. It has a long line of years put to work – its history goes way back in 1994 (where most of us were merely babies or non-existent.)

This goes to show that they have an effective group that produces high-quality computer peripherals for their clients. It goes two ways – computer peripherals and hardware. The HQ is being stationed at Fremont, California.

Shortly after a couple of years, this was shifted and got reincorporated in Delaware. This occurrence was in 2007, approximately 13 years after its incorporation in California.

In any case, they have went through a lot of roller-coaster these past few years, but they remained as strong as ever. Especially after the year 2010 where they made their best incorporation ever in Delaware. This resulted to the company we all know and love today, Corsair.

The brand has A LOT of products to offer. It’s not even farfetched to say that they have it all – this starts from its USB flash drives, computer cases, and of course, we have SSDs.

Now that we have that cleared, Corsair decided to make things interesting by putting out a product that’s both reasonably priced with great performance output.

The company has taken pride into their creation of Pro 16GB. To put it simply, the engineers made the product with a couple of things on their mind – speed, stability, and reliability. And we couldn’t ask for more. After all, that’s what we’re after, right?

We’re going to talk more about that in a bit. I do want to give you the emphasis on how awesome it is for the purpose of overlocking. We’ve reviewed other Desktop RAM before, and this one stuck out like a sore thumb. But in a good way, of course.

Don’t worry, Corsair weren’t kidding around when they decided to put this up for sale. The technology used is far from the generic brands’ software that’s in the same price range.

Like I said, it’s been geared to overlock your way to success. You’re free to give it a go on the newest 4th generation Intel platform (I know, it sounds super cool.) At the same time, this has an additional eight-layer PCBs and ICs.

This is to give the clients the assurance that only high-quality performance level is only welcome to Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB. You know what they say, potential only remains as it is without proper strings.

The next thing you notice immediately is its aluminum heat spreaders. Without it, let’s say it wouldn’t last a day if you’re into gaming marathons. But that’s not something to worry about, it delivers SUPERIOR temperature management.

That’s not the only reason I like it though, it gives an added boost to aesthetics. An aggressive gaming rig can’t hurt anyone, right? What’s more is that it has a pretty nice XMP 1.3 profiles, this gives room for a more consistent overclocking.

For the gamers who want to dress-up their style, then its options of available multiple colors is definitely a win. While headshots are important, doing it in style is important as well?

It seems the guys at Corsair truly wants us to match our system’s color scheme – surprisingly, the price is REALLY affordable. More money for system build-up. Yay!

Generally speaking, the brand itself knows how to put up a fight. This comes with a high-performance memory that’s meant to shake the competition in the market. Corsair is a go-to place to get your stuff done (regardless of what it is) in style.

PROS

  • Uses latest 4th generation Intel Core platform
  • Delivers an aggressive look for aesthetics
  • Geared for high overclocking potential
  • Available in multiple colors for customization

CONS

  • It doesn’t have Corsair optimization for AMD's

Verdict

Its features and what it can do is definitely amazing. But let’s get real here, while I think that this is cool for someone who wants high-quality set-up for performance gaming, this isn’t for gamers who aren’t into overclocking.

Surely, this would be a great asset for anyone, but if you think that the price is a bit too high, then you could settle for a RAM that doesn’t specializes in overlocking.

By the way, it kind of sucks that it doesn’t offer Corsair optimization as well, but this isn’t really a critical feature. It works perfectly well without it.

If you think that this is something you’d want to get your hands on, and you’re willing to pay an additional fee for quality overclocking, then go for it.

G.Skill makes you feel like you’re on top of the world because of its superior quality. Okay, it might not be crowned as THE best worldwide, but it was capable of winning arounds.

Yup, G.Skill makes you feeling so fly like a G6! (Sorry, I just had to do it!) My corny jokes set aside, its universal compatibility isn’t something to joke about. It isn’t just something you can get off the streets, for starters.

This gives you a running edge regardless of what you are. Hell, you can be an ordinary college kid who considers himself as a gaming enthusiast, OR you can be superman with an identity of a high-end system builder.

You can’t go wrong with what it offers to all of the gamers, its reliability is a hundred percent in every single game. As for the awards that I have mentioned, it has been acknowledged by different

I’ll tell you why even the big guns are going crazy over G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBX – and no, it’s not just because it has an awesome name. But I think that’s part of the reason. These are the world-renowned awards like Hardzone.

Going deeper to the technical stuff, this has some pretty mean features. It’s been built and designed differently from the common RAMs in the market. It complements a dual-channel capable systems for the best of experience.

If you don’t believe what I’m saying – which is just rude, I’m a very honest person – then you can trust the G.Kill’s rigorous testing process as a way of boosting up your confidence.

It wouldn’t be available in the market if it doesn’t pass their standards. This way, gamers are able to testify that it has been solely built for the purpose of upgrading their performance levels while in game, increasing the chances of compatibility, and of course, its stability.

This shows an even playing field for both AMD and Intel systems. Personally, I think that’s already a clever move from them. It gives you break from all of the compatibility concerns, and G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL simply delivers.

But that’s not all it has been made to do, you’re going to be in for a treat as the engineers decided to focus their energy of a low latency experience. This gives you your demands for optimum performance.

Not only that, but it offers optimum speed as well. Yeah, the term “slow is fast” doesn’t apply to the world of gaming, and its specialized specs are geared towards a faster work output, and a better entertainment time.

I’ll give you a bit of information regarding on its overclocking capabilities, this is able to support XMP 2.0 profiles. If that doesn’t impress you, then you’re better off purchasing more expensive ones in the market (which you can totally avoid.)

But in any case, if you’re a gaming enthusiast, its XMP 2.0 profiles is more than enough to swoon you for overclocking. You can go as far as saying that it’s a trouble-free automatic overclocking experience, it definitely is a notch higher than the usual ones in the market.

I should’ve mentioned this earlier, but its heat spreader isn’t there for style, although we have to admit it looks pretty darn stylish, it also serves the purpose of superior cooling efficiency.

You’re basically hitting two birds with one stone – besides, what’s wrong with showing off your gaming rig to your friends and family from time to time?

On the previous product, Corsair Vengeance Pro, I mentioned something about its overclocking capabilities. And guess what? It seems it has some competition! G.Skill is a lean mean overclocking machine for enthusiasts.

This has been specially designed for world-class performance – for those who are only past-time players, it doesn’t hurt to get the best experience, right? And surely the hardcore gamers will like its overclockability.

It isn’t only in theory though as it’s awesome – G.Skill has brought home the bacon (or gamers in this scenario) as it was awarded as the Best Memory Series.

This event took place a couple of years back, in 2011. The group of people who voted for G. Skill were a bunch of overclockers.

This already speaks volumes, if a community of pros have shortlisted this to their bucket list, why wouldn’t anyone want to? And I have to mention, it’s cheaper than Corsair Vengeance.

Again, it doesn’t fall short in the area of compatibility. G.Skill is pretty confident with its DDR3 memory solution. Like how they put their DDRs through several tests before selling them, it has given the company an assurance of strict quality control.

The series in question delivers the best of quality with the fastest speed and lowest timing. It wouldn’t be a complete package without sporting the firmest stability.

PROS

  • Complements a dual-channel capable systems
  • Both AMD and Intel systems
  • Support XMP 2.0 profiles
  • Optimum speed delivery
  • Award-winning Series
  • Strict Quality Control Processes

CONS

  • It seems it only works channel2 on motherboard

Verdict

Time to pass on the judgement: Overall, I’d say it’s pretty decent. It definitely serves its purpose at the end of the day, and it doesn’t break the bank.

G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL is a simple model that doesn’t hold much complications. While I’m pretty cool with Corsair Vengeance, its price may be too expensive for some gamers (especially for the occasional players.) So I personally think that this is a good replacement.

Nothing’s going to change though, G.Skill has definitely took the time to ensure quality – better get this on your shortlist!

We’re on the third on our list, and this time we’re going to give the floor to PNY Anarchy. We’ve been talking about overlocking for the past few minutes, and apparently PNY Anarchy 8GB Kit DDR3 wants to give their contribution as well.

Gamers, it’s no secret that we’re craving for Peak performance, and PNY does a pretty good job at having our backs. It offers memory modules that gives everyone a good time, when it comes to best-in-class speeds and bandwidth, it at the top of our list.

There’s more to this one, too. It offers low latency, and its power consumption is remarkably amazing. We always appreciate it when the makers exert more effort than usual just to ensure quality overclocking capabilities for enthusiasts and gamers alike.

We’ll give you more insights on its superior quality – the engineers were dead serious in making their product top-tier. This has went through a rather thorough procedure to give the market a guarantee that it’s being sold by the best.

The procedure includes being combined with tightly screen components (there’s your quality control right there) and they also have select ICs. In addition, they’ve even went as far and used advanced thermal performance.

There are three things that’s guaranteed for you to experience: you’ll be having nothing but the best of maximum reliability, stability in terms of gaming performance, and smooth responsiveness flow.

Oh BTW, if you aren’t into gaming or if you have a side hobby of doing demanding computing tasks – this excellent for photo and video editing. So this could work if you want to be a YouTube sensation/Gamer – ever heard of PewDiePie?

Generally speaking, we’re pretty much impressed with what it can do. But it’s not only limited to a couple of features, it comes in with an impressive XMP 2.0 Support.

This supports Intel XMP (Extreme Memory Profile), if you love doing things easily, overclocking wouldn’t be a problem. All you need to do is simply choose the pre-defined memory profile.

In order to do so, you’ll have to navigate it in the system’s BIOS. From there, you can quickly configure overclocked memory voltage. The steps are simplified so that anyone can do it – you’ll be running at top speed in just a few minutes.

Do you know what’s chill and does not give a single care? This one. It’s cool under pressure negating high-stress during the most demanding situations.

You might not be aware, but when you’re “in the zone” you have your hands glued to your keyboard and eyes to the PC, and playing for hours on end isn’t safe for most models. However, this turns down the heat despite your gaming extravaganza.

They’ve made their heat spreaders pretty sweet, it has been specially designed to make it look sleek as hell. The Anarchy heat spreaders does what its made to do – dissipate heat!

Pushing this baby to its limits without any worries can give you the superior gaming experience. And as well as great looks. I always have to stress out how important it is to win your games in style. Or even if you do lose, it’s okay. At least you’re setup is looking wins extra points for badassery.

The Anarchy modules have been made with class and finesse, and that alone made it earn an additional star from us. I even think that the guys from PNY wants us to be sexy gamers – you can choose a color that matches with your other components. Want it to look fierce and solid? Done.

Probably one of the most important thing to note – aside from its specs – is the question: who built it? And while I can’t name the big guys one by one, there’s one thing we can be sure of. They’ve been built by experts.

The company has been running for more than 30 years (that’s older than I am) and PNY is continuously upgrading their facilities. Their team’s performance have been increasing as well. This is from sourcing, testing, manufacturing – you name it, they’ve already one it.

But that’s not enough for them, they’ve decided to open their portfolio even more, expanding their specialties to digital imaging, computing, and to gaming solutions. These guys are one of the OGs in the gaming industry, and this has earned our respect.

Finally, this beast is backed for life. It doesn’t give you any hassle for its warranty. You can rest easy now as this free from any factory defects. Well, this goes to show that PNY knows what they’re doing, and they don’t have any plans of changing it otherwise.

PROS

  • Low latency and power consumption
  • Advanced thermal performance
  • Support Intel XMP (Extreme Memory Profile)
  • Sleek and stylish for Modification
  • Dissipate heat to keep cool

CONS

  • May experience BSOD error prompt except in SAFE Mode

Verdict

I’ll tell you this – upon receiving the package, I was elated to see that RAM sticks feels superior. I’ve been used to receiving flimsy RAM structures (especially when ordering online) and the fact that its hold is sturdy gives it a sense of credibility.

For my personal experience, the moment I successfully installed the two sticks into my PC, there was an incredible of pace. Just for the records, it already has 12GB for starters.

It’s a great product that knows how to roll, and I have to give them mad props for not making the price higher than it should be. The brand has an extremely colorful background, and love how they continuously produce great products such as this.

And if you’re wondering about the error prompt, the chances are quite low. Then again, it offers a pretty quick solution so I don’t consider its “Cons” to be much of a big deal.

Before I begin with my usual rant on its specs and how it fairs with the rest of the models – I must say, Viper sounds incredibly cool.

This might not be related to the review, but it gets an extra point for the name! What? Coolness has its own point system. Now, let’s take a look at Viper Elite’s specification and features (and hope that it doesn’t fail us.)

Just in case you haven’t been informed before, this comes from Patriot. And yes, that means Viper is made in Taiwan – shout out to all of the Taiwanese out there! I’d also like to add that ALL of the products from Patriot are proudly made in Taiwan as well.

You guys have no escape from the super cool Asians, buddy. That’s not really a bad thing, considering Asian people are nice. And just to prove a point, they even have this covered by a lifetime warranty.

There are some thing that they do differently in Patriot as well, unlike the other companies who let all of the machines do the testing for them, this company does hand tests.

And it does so on all of the modules to guarantee that all of the models are high in quality once it’s been sold in the market.

Moving forward, if you’re going to compare it with the other memory kits, you’ll notice that it has a more relaxed timings. This is at DDR4-3000, as for the usage of voltage, it has the number of 1.35V. You can interpret it as having more leeway for overclocking for better gaming experience.

I’m not sure if I’m the only one who’s like this, but I’m very particular about the packaging. I mean, who the hell would want to buy a product – no matter how superfast it is – if the packaging looks like it came from a questionable thrift shop down the alleyway? Certainly not me!

That’s why I even love Patriot even more with what they’ve done to its box. Viper elite boasts a rather simple design with a touch of style and class. If anything, it works effectively for getting customers. It won me over, so that’s something.

The package was basically a cardboard sleeve over a blister pack. I’ve noticed that they made it convenient for the store owners as the pack came with a hole for hanging.

I’d say it’s pretty attractive, considering that the first thing you’ll see right away is its high-level specification that they’ve highlighted. So it’s really pleasing to the eyes. There’s also a transparent window that lets you see the RAM.

Their package has also made contacting them easy for inquiries. At the back of the box, you’ll be able to see the other necessary information, such as how long their warranty is, social media links, their address to some of their offices, and many more.

What’s more is that this has been created using the latest Intel platforms, and to make sure that it won’t breakdown when you’re using it, this has been tested under the toughest conditions. Basically, the models that are sold in store have passed all of their demanding conditions.

As a bonus, the heat shield looks really good. It puts two things first – great performance and ultimate stability. And maybe I can throw it that it gives a neat vibe due to its aesthetics.

More things are going to blow you away, this uses a DDR4 memory, MEANING it has a higher bandwidth than the old but gold DDR 3 (Duh, obviously) but my main point is this specific model has been designed for enhanced gaming performance. Because 4 is clearly higher than three.

Setting my lame sarcasm aside, this can give you a boost when you’re dealing with large amounts of data. Or if you’re usually launching data-intensive applications, you can rest assured that you’re well-taken care of. It’s a guaranteed smooth and lag-free experience for when you’re doing your stuff.

There’s nothing really left to cover, except that Patriot’s Viper Elite memory modules are for the pros (and for the people who want to become pros.)

PROS

  • Designed for true performance
  • Assembled for the latest Intel® platforms
  • Stable even for demanding computer tasks
  • Reliable aluminum heat spreader
  • Beautifully designed card

CONS

  • Its built may be too thin

Verdict

The guys Patriot have done their research, and they have delivered a successful product to the market. Of course, I appreciate how thorough their quality assurance team is. But there’s something that bugs me a bit.

While the design looks good, and it IS my cup of tea, I don’t like how thin it is. Okay, it doesn’t affect the performance at all, but during the installation process, there was a clear flex when I was trying to fit them into the slot. Since I consider myself as sensitive person (I think) it gave me a mini heart attack.

But it’s more of my own opinion rather than a product defect. However, if it was a bit thicker, I’d say that this is close to perfect. Still, it doesn’t stop me from loving Viper Elite Series – show some love to the Asian homies!

We’ve tried some pretty cool brands in the market, and most of the top leading ones have impressed us more than anything else.

You know, we have G-Skill, Corsair, and Patriot – all these guys are amazing, and to be put on the same level with the big boys (or big girls, no need to sound sexist here) is definitely something commendable.

And I felt a really strong connection with ADATA. Or…I’m just over exaggerating this part, but I’m not kidding when I say when it comes to quality, it’s on part of the leading brands. The best part is that this is a bit cheaper, too.

I guess this is what you get for wanting to explore gaming components, you get to find untold treasures. Let me give you a bit of overview, the ram sticks, which I have complained briefly before this product, feels different.

As a matter of fact, you can immediately sense that it’s high of quality. There’s no feeling of flimsiness whatsoever – hey, everyone wants it hard and sturdy, don’t you think? *cute wink*

And I must say, I’m pretty happy about its heat sinks. I was expecting for it to come off because that’s what I’ve been accustomed to with my past experiences, and I’m glad to report that there are no heat sinks that came off.

This doesn’t use the usual thermal tape that’s often used by the top dogs in the industry, those thongs don’t really work. And if they do, they come off pretty quickly.

However, ADATA stepped its game up and used metal hinges instead. Yeah boii, it feels legit as hell! The added weights isn’t really a concern, it gives more of an overall impact for its quality.

I’ve decided to give it a chance with CS: GO, and the results were spectacular! What’s up, terrorists? I’ve had loads of fun with XPG V1, and the installation process wasn’t even taxing.

Now, I haven’t ran out of words to say about it. The memory modules have been specially created for maximization of game time. Gaming enthusiasts of all sorts are going to be thrilled with its all-around solutions to meet even the most demanding tasks.

Heatsinks are the way of life, and because they know how much of an impact it would make to the product, they have designed it to be practical and elegant with lightweight aluminum.

This keeps it from overheating, and it also gives off a rather full-load operation. In other words, compared to the majority of products, this has the clearest improvement when it comes to performance.

The components aren’t just half-assed quality that they’ve randomly put together (because apparently a lot of people think that way due to the price range.) It has been carefully selected, and these parts have been fine-tuned for better results.

Stability isn’t a stranger to ADATA XPG V1 – this is anything but traditional. In order to make a better module, they have added some pretty sweet, advanced thermal management features to boot.

It also gives you a couple of options for you to choose from. If you want to get it in one of these frequencies: 1600/1866/2133Mhz, they have it.

You’re also get to choose the GB capacity, it’s available in both 4GB and 8GB. It’s only fair to say that they have thought of a way to fit in almost any computer.

Gamers who want to add finesse into their gaming rig understands how important it is to get your setup in a modernized look.

Naturally, no one wants to sport a gaming rig that looks straight out from the 90’s (I don’t dig its bulky fashion AT ALL. Yes, even when it was still in the 90’s.)

It comes with a limited lifetime warranty, but it’s already good enough. ADATA XPG V1 does leave an impression that it’ll give you a good number of years – I’ve had it for a couple of months now, and it works as if it’s brand-new.

Going back to the product’s efficiency standards, it’s one of those things where you can’t afford to miss. It’s always appreciated to see that the company’s doing its best to give off a rather commendable backtrack, and knowing that this has been JEDEC-certified standards and regulations gives a sense of pride.

The company’s pretty confident of their selection and filtering process, there’s not a single chip that has passed without going through their strict system. Combine it with their high-end PCBs, you’ve secured yourself a long-term buddy for the best of gaming sessions.

PROS

  • JEDEC-certified standards and regulations
  • Advanced thermal management features
  • Built for long-term use
  • High-quality components for durability
  • Versatility factor for better compatibility

CONS

  • It doesn’t have G.Studd sticker

Verdict

I forgot to mention in the review, but my eyes turned into hearts the moment I saw this beauty. I admit, I’m picky with appearances (only in this area though), and all of the products here have been carefully handpicked by us, but this is THE best on the list when it comes to aesthetics.

Seriously, who wouldn’t fall in love with its stroking good looks? It may have the simplest design on the list, but it has the most kick to it. Just saying, because if you’re after a cool set-up, this is definitely a big factor.

And also, there are several of color schemes available as well. You can choose from badass black, boasting red, and even cool blue color scheme. Either way, you’re going to love its blend. If you’re curious, I have the badass black…because black.

Is there any other way to end the article with G.Skill? Darn. I still think that the name is too catchy for its own good – now I’m feeling so fly like a G.Skill. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. HA!

But yes, G.Skill is one of the top-tier brands on the market today, and I’ve decided to put this right after ADATA XPG V1 because this is a lot cheaper. Well, just in case you’re looking for alternatives, I’ve got your back.

It still goes beyond the hundred dollar mark though, but no biggie. The performance can speak for itself. Now, G.Skill is offering us one of its newest line up, and this bad boy has the capability of delivering full range speeds.

It can start from 2800MHz on through 4200MHz, you can just adjust it to your preferred speed depending on your needs. For the 16GB kit (it’s the one that I personally own) it comes with XMP 2.0 profile.

As for the numbers that it runs with, it’s at 3200MHz. The timings are at 16-18-18-38 2T. Also the needed volt is quite reasonable standing at 1.35V.

For those who tend to be paranoids about its durability, you can trust G.Skill’s limited lifetime warranty. It means you’re going to be all good with the kit as long as you refrain yourself from removing the spreaders. Or even the stickers. If you do keep that in mind, you’ll have plenty of time for RMA.

G.Skill has done a lot of good things to its looks, but I wouldn’t go as far as to saying that it’s better than ADATA XPG V1.

But I must say, this is one of the best models that the brand has produced. After all, gamers almost always go for the better-looking ones.

The good news is that it carries a lot of punch that backs its looks. As a matter of fact, in the DDR4 range, this is THE latest that came out. Meaning, it’s been built for gaming and overclocking.

It wouldn’t have made such a name in the market if it weren’t optimized for 6th generation Intel core processors. This can take you to the future with its dual channel setup and its modules.

PROS

  • Luxury two-colour heatsinks
  • Offers new fin design
  • Effective heat dissipation
  • 3200MHz memory speed
  • Offers full memory timings
  • 6th Generation Intel Core Processors

CONS

  • We’ve noticed that one of the Dimms isn’t working properly

Verdict

Not only does it have the looks, but it also has the power of technologically advanced components in it. It generally offers an outstanding performance meant to stay with us for a very long time.

So, is it worth the purchase? Why, of course! I don’t really have anything to add, except for it’s worth the money. BTW, it’d be best to get it on sale, the price may be too expensive for some.
